Jennifer's Apex Slush Pile Scorecard for 2009
(The other submission editors have their own scorecards.)

  • 201 total submissions

  • 201 total submissions read.
  • 199 total rejections.
  • 02 total submissions currently kept for round-robin editorial evaluation.
  • 03 total submissions taken to the second level.
  • 03 rejected from the second level.
  • 00 published in Apex Magazine

  • 00 submissions to go.

    Reasons why stories were rejected:

    1. Not enough horror.

    2. Way too many technical errors. More than 10 typos in one story.

    3. Too long of a set up. Get the action quicker. Don't meander your way to it. I don't care who is in love with who if it has no bearing on the story.

    4. The characters were exactly the same at the end of the story as they were at the beginning.

    5. Not a story. Just a scene.

Reasons why the one story was held:

    1. Awesome title.

    2. Unusual protagonist.

    3. Science fiction? Check. Horror? Check.

    4. Technically correct.

    5. Action from the get-go.

    6. Great character motivation even with the "you sick puppy" factor.

    7. Nice ending.

That's interesting that you rate the title as important (I do too).

The 'Reasons why the story was held' list is useful too.

    Thanks for sharing :)
