Tomorrow, I will head out about noon to drive four hours to an isolated place I've never been before to meet up with people—some of whom I know and some of whom I don't—to spend four nights and five days in a working retreat. There is no cell phone service. It is in a rainforest. The internet access is limited. My husband has already told me I need to ping him, in some manner, every day. He is a wee bit unnerved by the lack of easy connectivity. I'm am, too, but looking forward to it.

This is not the beginning of my newest horror story but a basic description of me getting ready to head out to the Rainforest Village Writers Retreat run annually by Patrick Swenson.

I know I'm not the first person to mention that this sort of thing is ripe for horror story pickings. I mean, come on, 30 writers with such a set up? I'm sure stories have been born from the setting in this writing retreat already. I won't be working on such a story. I've got a new book due in two months to write. I intend to get one heck of a jump start on it this coming retreat.

Keep your shoes on, don't run up the stairs and never, ever say 'I'll be right back'

I'm sure you'll have a great time. Good luck on getting your jump start.

It's supposed to be an awesome place and a great experience. I plan to go, one of these days.

But if there is a suspicious sound, don't say "let's all split up and check it out"...

And the best part is, even if there was a killer on the loose and someone somehow got a phone call out, if the caller described the setting the police would think it is a prank....
Hum...
Just remember the old rule, you don't have to be the fastest, you just have to be fast enuf to make someone else slower than you.

Smoke signals and pigeons?

Maybe whispering to the trees?

Wish I could go. Maybe next year. Meanwhile, do not invite handsome men you encounter in the woods to accompany you back to your cabin. Do not explore attics on your own--with or without candles. If you meet an old woman on a path and she asks for help be kind.

Have fun!
